www.huabianxia.com - elizabeth mitchell you are my sunshine Lyrics

The other night dear, as I lay sleeping,
I dreamed I held you in my arms,
but when I woke dear, I was mistaken,
and I hung my head and cried.

You are my sunshine, my only sunshine
you make me happy when skies are gray
you'll never know dear, how much I love you,
please don't take my sunshine away.

I'll always love you and make you happy
if you will only say the same
but if you leave me to love another
you'll regret it all some day

You are my sunshine, my only sunshine
you make me happy, when skies are gray,
you'll never know dear, how much I love you,
please don't take my sunshine away.

You told me once dear you really loved me
that no one else could come between
but now you've left me and love another
you have shattered all my dreams.

You are my sunshine, my only sunshine
you make me happy, when skies are gray,
you'll never know dear, how much I love you,
please don't take my sunshine away.

This story is about one of the many developmentally disabled people that I have the honor to work with. I will call her Mary to protect her identity.

Mary was born with "downs Syndrome". She lived with her very loving family until her mother was no longer able to take care of her. It was then that she came to the agency that I work for. As is true with so many challenged people, their families love them so much that they don't have to do much for themselves. When Mary came to us, she did not communicate, except for an occasional, yes, no, I don't care.

One night I went into her room and she was sitting on her bed watching the "Statler Brothers Show" on TV. I sat down with her to watch. They started singing "You are my Sunshine", and to my surprise, Mary sat there and sang every word of the song with them. Needless to say, it brought tears to my eyes and we continued watching the show and singing right along with them.

From that point on, we worked a lot with Mary, which included a lot of singing, dancing, and just having fun. It wasn't long after that she began communicating to us in "real" sentences. We found out later that her Mother sang that song to her all her life. It just proves that with the help of music, and a lot of loving care, miracles do happen.
